i didnt give up, i just took a really long nap.
today i learned about dub, a style derived from remixing reggae and fucking with studio effects. it's characterised by a super deep and spacey sound. this is a precursor to electronic dance music, and is also where the Dub in Dubstep comes from. the step part of Dubstep comes from 2-step, a typically UK genre of dance music with shuffly beats. Putting them together, Dubstep is shuffly beats with a super spacey sound. This doesn't line up with the popular perception of Dubstep, which is a whole fascinating thing where a style of dance music that had existed for many years is attached to a radically different new type of dance music. im curious to learn more about this.
There's something violating about an algorithm designed to deconstruct and compartmentalize my human experiences in an effort to keep me using a paid service. This glorified word cloud masquerading as "curation" commodifies music by letting a machine develop one's personal taste.
As far as pivotal years in regards to music, 1967 and 1991 stand out as being particularly stacked. I would like to put forwards
plot twist ive actualy been on a hip hop kick lately. I took it upon myself to explore Danny Brown's discography and found I quite like his music. XXX is my fav album by him but I wouldnt disagree that Atrocity Exhibition is better. Quaranta is a really solid album with a unique vibe for him, uknowwhatimsayin has some great beats and is some lighter fun, but i find Old to be a bit exhausting.
I also really enjoyed revisitng DS2 by Future, which has bangers for days and holds up well as an album. This in time for the release of WE DON'T TRUST YOU, which i kept in my rotation for a while for the vibes and tasty beats. The follow up was nowhere near as good, way too long and mushy.
Next up is exploring more of the Atlanta scene via Outkast's discography.
ive listened to SCARING THE HOES too many times to count this week and i still have no idea if i like it. what a fucking enigma
artists dont need to slayy they can just make good music
two things can be true at the same time: the québécois national identity is ultimately founded on french colonialism, but is also a genuine culture that was threatened to be stamped out as a product of british colonialism
i bought myself a book about noises in an effort to get myself to read, but i always find it hard to read things. I think if i were to read, nonfiction would be my jam, but that remains to be seen. I keep forgetting to bring it with me and then i dont make time for it. should i make it a task i have to do? is it worth reading if i dont actively want to? am i overthinking a very simple activity? i think its worth challenging myself in order to expand my horizons, because sticking to comfort is boring and safe and can push me into my own echo chamber, but its also my life and i should do what i so desire
why havent i continued my japanese lessons? was i just learning japanese because i was a massive Hirasawa fangirl? what are the mechanics of my motivation and can i take control of them? to what degree is ok to not want to do things i nominally want to do?
i havent continued my japanese lessons because i have lost interest and motivation. it was frustrating to learn a language in a context where i basically had no opportunities to use it
I had never given the deluxe tracks on Get to Heaven much thought, but they've kinda clicked with me, especially We Sleep in Pairs, a rather straightforward ballad with some lovely low register singing from Higgs. Hapsburg Lippp is a banger obviously, but SO to Yuppie Supper, a proggy (mostly) instrumental lacking in hooks but with gobs of intense urgency. I'd love to see them expand upon that sound. Only as Good as My God has a really fun hook but is greatly elevated by Higgs's unhinged vocal delivery

Fourth Figure would be the best Alvvays closer were it more than 80 seconds long
The new Everything Everything album isn't what I expected it to be, and I'm really not sure I like the direction they're going. I'll need longer with it because I have a history of being kind of cold towards their music while eventually growing immensely fond of it, but this feels underdeveloped in comparison to their previous albums.
